The city
Khiva's old town, Itchan Kala, is a walled city you can walk end to end in an hour — and spend two days photographing. It is the most atmospheric stop on the route.
One full day covers Itchan Kala; two lets you slow down, add the Dishon Qala (outer town) and a desert sunset. Khiva is small — that is the point.
Fly to Urgench (about 35 km away) and taxi in, or drive across the Kyzylkum Desert from Bukhara — a long, straight, memorable road. Inside the walls, everything is on foot.
Khiva's winters are the coldest on the route (January nights average around −6 °C); summers reach about 36 °C. Staying inside Itchan Kala costs more than staying outside the walls but saves every transfer. ATMs are scarcer here than in Tashkent — bring cash.
